Here is how it works:
You will choose an area code in the US or Canada for your phone number for US$39.95 per year.
A digital phone adapter (it fits in your USB port) will be sent to you by the company providing this service, www.magicjack.com. This adapter is a small device that plugs into your USB port on your computer. You plug a regular telephone into this adapter.
When you pick up the telephone, you will get a US or Canadian dial tone. You make calls to anywhere in the US or Canada at no charge. If customers/friends call your number, it will ring seconds later in whatever country you are in. They won't know you are not in the US or Canada and there is no extra charge, no matter which country you are in. When you make calls, the Caller ID of the person you are calling will show you are calling from Los Angeles or whichever city code you choose to set up your number. They won't know you are not in the US or Canada.
This is a VOIP service, meaning the calls are carried over the internet. However this has nothing to do with talking on computers or microphones as this type of service required in the past. You will be talking on a regular telephone and nobody will know the difference.
